the day that should have been

Have you read Voyage to the Bunny Planet, by Rosemary Wells?

We got it at the library a few weeks ago, and it is magical. Everytime we read it I have to fight back tears, and the kids lament that it doesn't go on longer.

The book perfectly describes three really bad days. Snow in your shoes, being bullied, getting sick at school and having no one tuck you in... then in each case the kid having the bad day imagines a trip to the bunny planet, where they get to live the day that should have been. The days that should have been are completely different from the days the bunny children in the book were having in real life -- weather is different, location is different, the bunny people they are with are different -- it is just their ultimate, perfect, relaxing day.

Firstly, you should absolutely get the book and read it with your child. Secondly, in honor of some bloggers who are having an anxious time lately (possibly including yours truly), I think we should write our Bunny Planet days that should have been!

I will think about mine and write it later. If you write one, comment with a link so we can track down your post. If you don't blog, feel free to write your ultimate relaxing day in the comment form.

Now I'm off to WalMart to replace the tire we blew at 11 p.m. on the interstate in the middle of nowhere last night. Jason changed a tire for the first time in his life and he did it really quickly! I couldn't believe it and was so glad he was with me, as I've never changed a tire and once when I was 6 months pregnant and had the twins with me and a state trooper had to change a tire for me, he had a really difficult time.

It was hot. Later he is going to wear his tool belt for me and let me call him Schneider.

  1. That book sounds awesome. I am going to look for it for my kids with Asperger Syndrome. They'll be all over that. Thanks for planning my lesson on Wednesday. :)

  2. After the Schneider tryst, you should have him try one of those vocie changing helmets. We have Darth Vader and Transformers. Nothing like you man walking up to you in nothing but his socks and a Dark Vader mask saying, "Kim, I AM your Daddy!"

Oh, and I will get this book. the kids are REALLY into stories and books now. I love to listen to books aloud at story time. It makes me feel four years old again.
