Clearly, you guys were really excited about the grocery store daycare. And rightly so! I remember when I first learned of it, and the boys and Haney were still too young for it. I feared I would die before I ever saw my children enter into that Promised Land. And now, here I am.
Giant Eagle isn't the only grocery store with child care -- I know some Kroger stores have them too. Not all Giant Eagles have an "Eagle's Nest" up here.
Drawbacks: Children have to be at least 3, and have to enter willingly. They won't take crying or protesting kids. Also, Giant Eagle is a very expensive store for doing most of your grocery shopping.
Slight drawback: You can't leave the store. [LAUGH HERE.] Not even to load your groceries into your car, which was a big drawback for me when I had kids ages 1/3/3/5. Because a heavy cart full of groceries requires two hands, and so do 3-year-old twins.
HUGE PLUSES: You sign then kids in using your license, and they have you a walkie talkie or just a wrist thing that serves a purpose I don't yet understand. You then have up to TWO GLORIOUS HOURS to yourself, except for the time you are rushing to get your child to the store bathroom (because there's no bathroom attached to the child care).
The toys are really good. They have nice kitchen sets, cute looking baby dolls (no hair, so they don't look cracked-out and funky), amazing train tables, lots of craft and coloring stuff, and even tvs with video games. So far all the attendants have been very nice, and there's a supervisor who is usually there. She clearly has a background in early childhood education, and is really good at getting the kids comfortable and involved.
At the store I normally go to, they give you a punch card and after 9 times of dropping off your kids, you get a free fountain drink or coffee at the IN-STORE COFFEE SHOP. Yes, I said it: This store actually has a seating area with tables and sandwiches and chips and drinks... So really you could go there and just sit and have time to yourself.
Not sure if they have wifi.
So! Especially if you live in a major metropolitan area, you probably have such stores around and just never knew it! I'd check the websites of all grocery stores in your area and see if some have child care at locations just outside your normal path.

When it comes to children and pets, I can be extremely patient, and I
confess to being rather proud of this trait. A lot of people tire of my
daughter M’s ...

I feel like I live at the grocery store, an assortment of them really. I went Monday, Ryan went today, I have to go tomorrow and I have to go to the farm Friday :( My sister has a store by her with childcare and I am considering moving up there just so I can go and eat along...I am sure you can understand. Sadly, there are none of these magical places within a 30 minute radius of my home and the one special pizza place with the glass enclosed "kids room" closed. Guess I am stuck with them when I shop or try to eat. If I were you, I would go every day and but 4 things and then sit for two hours and relax with a coffee and a book, what bliss!
ReplyDeleteI read this out loud to my husband. He said, "How much does this cost?" I told him it was free (right?) and he got all excited too! He started asking why they give you the punches if it's free, and where you live, and how we can find this grocery store. Should have vlogged that conversation for you!
ReplyDeleteWe signed up for the YMCA because they offer two hours of childcare starting at 6weeks old and up any day you workout. I figured it would be a nice way to get away from my kids and maybe get off my butt at the same time. We don't have a grocery store though, that would be awesome. I could go to the gym and then the grocery store and make it home in time for naps.
ReplyDeleteWow. That really is pretty incredible. Especially the drug-free dolls.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I just want to say that I kind of feel like some sort of blogland celebrity or something since you mentioned me in that previous post. Well, less like I'm a celebrity...more like you are and I'm the crazy letter-writing picture-sending ohmygodiloveyou fangirl and you acknowledged me. Hyperventilate.
Oh, and I hope Miss A's thumbsuck-breaking works. My teeth were/are jacked up as well. I think that's maybe why God had mercy on me and my kids don't seem to get any inordinate amount of satisfaction sucking on appendages.
My kids keep asking if they can stay at the Eagle's Nest when we go. I'm a freak, though, and I won't let them because I don't know the person watching them. There's always a minor tantrum about that :(
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, my sister can't say enough good things about the Eagle's Nest. That's always her first stop at the grocery store, too.
Off topic: I had no idea that Giant Eagle was expensive. Guess I'm grocery-store sheltered :D
We don't have a Giant Eagle. Or a Kroger. I think some Wegman's have them too but we don't have one of those either. I guess I have to move.
ReplyDeleteMassachusetts has none of these promised lands. Sigh.
