it's the first day of the rest of my life, and i hope this isn't a trend

It's November, it's the month when I try to post every day, and by golly I'm gonna do it.

P was sick on Sunday, and he and G and Jason and I were up a LOT during the night dealing with his uncontrollable fever.

Monday morning Haney sat down at the breakfast table and began to cry almost immediately. I went out to see what was wrong and found she'd thrown up right on top of the table. It was awesome. So Haney and P missed their Halloween parties at school.

My friend brought me an emergency dose of ibuprofen to piggy back with our acetaminophen, and that brought P's fever down enough that he felt he could trick-or-treat. Since his costume was the equivalent of a hospital mask and since we really wanted that candy, we decided to let him. I hurried to slap together some dinner for my Jawa, Batman, and vampire. Haney came in whimpering, and I picked her up, and she threw up a little in my hair. Then she ran to her bowl and threw up some more.

Because I was crunched for time, I put up my hair in a clip and kept working on dinner.

P lasted less than an hour, and came back to sit with me and Haney. This morning both of them were still sick.    Haney, whose BMI was already about half the lowest number on the growth chart graph, is starting to look a little thin. Both of them just lay around and don't even have the energy to fight.

Tonight at bedtime we discovered an overnight pull-up full of liquid poo under Haney's bed. It says something about the stuffiness of my nose or the normal baseline stench of my house that we didn't find it for more than 12 hours.

And the kicker? I fear Miss A has another case of lice. If this were the same case the lice would be huge and everywhere, right? How is this happening? If I make her wear her hair up every day, will that prevent her from getting lice from classmates? What if I slather her hair in gel or leave-in conditioner every day? Tomorrow we are getting up early to apply a thick coat of Cetaphil -- thanks, Suburban Correspondent, for the tip!

On top of all this I got a large-ish contract job and it involves a dizzying amount of paperwork and getting things notarized and overnighting things. I have handled the paperwork and am comfortable with the notary at our bank, so I feel okay about everything except overnighting papers via UPS. Why? I don't like UPS. I don't like having to go to their weird store. I want to go to the post office and make them take care of it.

So, to recap, tomorrow morning I am getting up early to work out with Jillian Michaels, then treating my daughter for lice which involves blow-drying her hair for an hour, then probably cleaning up some poop or puke somewhere, then leaving the house for the bank and UPS, then coming back to work. Which means that by the time I've been up 5 hours I'll have done at least 7 things I hate. I will keep you and the internet at large up to date on my progress through this terrifying day, with probably a lot more detail than you'd like. But that's what November means around here, internet.

  1. Holy cow, Stella has had lice twice this year! Totally grossed me out. I used lice MD the second time and it worked really well. It is the pesticide free shampoo. Not fun. I hope everyone is feeling better tomorrow and you don't have any vomit or poo to clean!

  2. You might want to cut the hair shorter to make your life easier. The Cetaphil does work, but you definitely have to do repeat applications. If the lice is being passed around the classroom, she can definitely get it again. Where do they put their coats? You should send her to school with a big trash bag and instruct her to put her coat and backpack in it and keep it under her chair. (I know - the teacher will LOVE that. Tell the school that if they can't control their lice problem, you will.)

Actually, if you missed an egg or two and it hatched, it could be the same infestation. Gah, now my head itches. Thanks.

  3. This sounds really sucky. Sorry. And lice-free hugs.

  4. You can have what is called a cellophane put on her hair. It's essentially hair-color, but they make it in clear. Lice do not prefer color-treated hair. It's not 100%, but it's around 90ish

  6. Check out Fairy Tales products. They are an organic shampoo and leave-in conditioner that have rosemary, tea tree oil, and other smelly things that supposedly create an inhospitable environment for lice. Right now there is an EPIDEMIC in my girl's elementary school and a case in my twins' preschool, and we've avoided it so far (AND NOW I AM DOOMED BECAUSE I SAID IT OUT LOUD). I spray the hell out of their hair every damn day.

  7. Prevent Head Lice

Head lice do not like tea tree oil, lavender oil or peppermint oil. Create a mixture of your favorite essential oil from the three recommended. Combine one cup of water with 12 drops of the oil of choice in a spray bottle. Spray your hair daily to prevent head lice infestations.

  8. My mom used to braid my hair soooo tightly every morning before I went to school for fear of lice. Not sure if that's what prevented me from getting it, but I never had a problem with it

  9. I am not making this up. I was reading this post this morning when I thought, "My daughter (I used her name in my mind) has been scratching her head a lot recently." Then, right before we were about to walk out the door, I decided to check her. GIANT ADULT MF LICE CRAWLING AROUND IN HER MF HAIR. This is the first time she's had lice. I think it's your fault. I took a video of the lice in a ziploc this morning after 1 hour 40 minutes of treatment/combing. I will post it later. It is horrifying. Even more horrifying is the knowledge that there is NO WAY I got all those things... I mean, there were BUGS crawling around. I think I got all those, but the eggs and whatever teenagers there were... no chance in hell. I am futilely (is that a word?) washing like 10 loads of bedding and clothes and stuff, but I'm sure they're just jumping around and hatching and shit on my floor right now before I can get all the loads in the washer. We Cetaphil-ed all four children tonight. That is my only hope. My head itches.

  10. Alicia, I guess I can pat myself on the back for providing the public service message that enabled you to find your lice infestation. I am so sorry! All the stuff I found online about the Cetaphil treatment was reassuring, about how they will die in a day or so off a human head, and can't jump or fly... Email me. We'll have a two-person support group.
