you know you've hit a new low when you're hoping for abnormal blood work

Today Miss A had her appointment with her pediatrician to talk about what the heck is going on. I love her pediatrician, for a few reasons:

  • He's not all, "Hmm, let's watch this and then in a few days if it's not better we'll talk." No. He values my time and understands that if I managed to drag the kids to the office, something is up. Then he prescribes us some freaking antibiotics and doesn't beat around the bush.
  • He has four kids too, which I think has something to do with his comfort level with handing out antibiotics, and with butt strep. I think it also contributes to his lack of excitement when Miss A says that the reason she's acting out is that she needs her own room.
Through the avalanche of BS she funneled his way about how sharing a bedroom interrupts her tantrums (seriously) and how the boys and Haney annoy her, her pediatrician decided there isn't anything really wrong except that she needs to figure out how to deal with stress and irritation and anxiety. It was very reassuring, the way he said it. He referred us for a psych consult and ordered blood work because her weight has fallen off her steady 5th percentile curve. I've been worrying about her growth for a while since she's the oldest kid in her grade, as well as the smallest. He ordered thyroid tests and a test for Celiac and stuff to check her kidney and liver function and whatnot.

I'm hoping the results come back saying she has Celiac and therefore if we just stop eating wheat she'll be able to control herself. That would feel magical!

  2. Thought about you during my run this morning. (Hope you feel very special about that). For some reason, it hit me out of the blue. Who gives a crap if pulling A in the middle of the year would upset anyone at the school? Your priority is A and the other kids. This is the same school that had trouble FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR learning the identities of two of their students! Unacceptable! The fact that you pulled her last year for homeschooling would be a clue to them that you are putting her needs first so it won't be totally put of left field. I say if there is room in the charter school, put her in it. She has six months left this year plus the summer. Why wait 9 months? Good luck!

  3. I hope you find answers. Food allergies can totally impact behavior and mood, so if this doesn't come back you may wish to see an allergist anyway. I always feel like we are cautiously chipping away with my oldest, what is an actual health issue and what is personality. Hang in there, you are doing everything you can to help her and your family as a whole :)

  4. I agree with Tribe Mama. I heard of someone who kept having panic attacks and those ended up being a symptom of a dairy allergy. I would totally do allergy testing....Though as a mother of twins with food allergies I can tell you it sucks. But so do her outbursts, so better to know why, right?

  6. Celiac! Magical!

I am now playing Bug Village. I like it. It is not as much a commitment as the other [seriously, phone just interrupted: "Your bugs are very hungry. Feed them..."] games I've played that require this kind of attention (like, for example, the Oregon Trail free one... I had to cut myself off of that one).

But how do you complete that quest with the 3 friends? Do you have three-plus actual FRIENDS who play this game? Because I am thinking that quest is going to be sitting at the top of my list for a very long time, and then I'm going to get bored. Also, I was dumb at first and used all my coins by doing things I thought I HAD to do that I didn't have to do, and now I can only get them by watching really loud videos that advertise other games.

I love that you have a pediatrician with four kids. If everyone I knew had four kids also, I think my life would be a lot easier and less annoying. People just do not GET this, and there is no use explaining.
